updated the critical service pack, when computer
restarted it got hung in a booting cycle and will not
start. Any ideas?

Do you mean Windows XP Service Pack 1?
Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select Last known good configuration.
Otherwise...
Reboot tapping, Select Safe Mode this time.
Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel
Select "Service Pack 1" and uninstall it.

If the above fail, perform a Repair Installation:

Then install Service Pack 1 this way:
