Crippled Windows XP - Need Workarounds

My PC at work is set up with Windows XP featuring
customizations/restrictions so ridiculous that even harmless tasks cannot be
performed. Since I have no onsite IT folks, I'm hoping someone can advise me
on some workarounds to two specific irritations.

1. Cannot view the Windows desktop. Windows Key + D shortcut has no effect.
Quick Launch icons are not present as well. When the system boots, it boots
into a program (specific to our business) that is designed to be the user's
only point of interaction. All I want to do is place a shortcut on the
desktop to the My Documents folder so that I can browse it as necessary.
Preferably, I'd be able to do the Windows Key + D shortcut and then go into
the folder. I realize I can access the Desktop through Windows Explorer, but
what it takes to get to Explorer on this system is precisely what I'm trying
to avoid by getting direct access to the visual Desktop. Specifically, the
only way to Windows Explorer is to open Internet Explorer, go to the Search
pane, search My Computer for for windows explorer.exe and then launch it.

2. In Windows Explorer, the drop down menu does not feature "Folder
Options". My goal is to get all the computer's folders and files in Explorer
to display in the List format. As it stands, the folders are set up with the
jumbo tard icons which slows down browsing terribly. Also, I would like the
default action for folders to be "explore" instead of "open". I like the
file tree in the left hand pane.

I do have access to the registry, and I'm perfectly comfortable working with
it. I just don't know which keys & values (if any) to tweak in these
situations.
