Ok, this is weird. I had a Creative labs 5.1 sound card, and it
worked fine. At one point my machine went down (bad motherboard, no
problems with the sound card). I was also building my friend a new
machine, and I couldn't get his (OEM) sb live to read the drivers or
be detected through WinXP, so I gave him mine, figuring I'd exchange
his card later.

Later on, I returned it for another OEM card and had the same problem
on my machine (AMD Athlon XP 2 gig, 513 ram, geforce 4 video card with
64 megs ddr). I downloaded drivers from creative, but it would tell
me that they didn't detect any sound blaster cards on my system. I
went and exchanged it for another one and had the same problem. I
returned it and bought a new live 5.1 card from a different store (not
oem, this time). Windows did not detect it as a sound blaster, but I
installed the drivers it came with and it installed and worked. I
notice on some games (like UT2004), if I use regular or low sound, it
works fine. If I use EAX or 3d hardware, it plays sound, but kicks
off noises, like machine clicks. I figured it was a driver issue, so
again downloaded the latest drivers, and again, they told me I didn't
have any sound blaster cards installed on my system! What's going on
here?!? I sent an email to Creative, but have not heard back from
them yet. Thanx in advance for any ideas you might have.

Good luck. Creative will tell you it is not their problem because it
ain't the sound card. Your prolly going thru an IRQ issue even with
PnP. First off some motherboards don't like you to put a aound
Blaster in the last pci slot because it conflicts with the IDE ports.
An Asus A7V for example. Some don't want one in the first slot by the
AGP por because the first slot ahres the same IRQ as the AGP port.
The reason I bring this up is because I didn't notice you saying
anyting about trying to use different slots?

It seems to me that I did that, but I don't remember, I'll give it a
shot. I don't think it's an IRQ issue - As I mentioned, this has
happened with several cards in multiple computers, but the older sb
live card I had worked with no problem. I think it is in the last
slot, and I am using an assus motherboard. I'll try putting it into
the middle slot and see what happens. What's weird is the drivers it
came with works, just not the windows drivers or the downloadable
drivers.

Finally got through to Creative (their tech support was actually very
helpful). Apparently, the newer SB Live cards cannot use the old
drivers, and my understanding is that they will not be updating the
sound drivers for these cards any more. That sux, because I really
liked my old SB Live and wish I hadn't given it away. HOWEVER, that
being said, I pulled the SB card and considered it a loss. Went out
and bought a Turtle Beach Riviera (24 bit) sound card for 39. Sounds
fantastic!!!! My room-mates came down to the basement from the 3rd
floor to ask me to turn down my computer, LOL!!! Get it! Now!

A friend of mine is using my old Xgamer 5.1 with no probs on XP. The
only reason I gave it to him was cux I bought the Audigy 2 Platinum.
Once I got the Xgamer to talk it worked fine for me.

I had the same problem. When I was using Win98se I was
using a SB Live, Value card with no problems. When I
installed WinXP, the SBLive,5.1 card was installed with
it. I kept getting the same message you did. No SB
detected. I removed the SBLive,5.1 and reinstalled the
SBLive, Value and it works fine....go figure!
