Creating subsidiaries, easily

Years ago when I bought a copy of Lotus for Windows, I was amazed at
how easy it was to go 3-D once you have a template. For example, if I
am doing a valuation for a divorce and let's say there were 5 similar
businesses in a marital estate. If I make up a pro forma balance
sheet and income statement template for these businesses, can I easily
grow it 5 deep with one consolidated set?

When I mention it people say pivot tables. I've looked at pivot
tables and I am not sure it's that easy or even possible as it appears
that the all the schedules pivot on one item.

Would there be anything in Excel that would allow me to grow
statements in 3-D? To really stretch matters, could each element of
the consolidated be it's own consolidated and have subsidiaries behind
them?
