Look at Acronis True Image. You can image your drive and also do
incremental backups.

I personally like Norton Ghost for this. I create DOS boot disks with
Ghost, which will allow saving the image on USB, Firewire, or network
drives. I then use Nero to create a bootable CD or DVD that runs Ghost off
the CD/DVD when you boot from it, and can restore the hard drive from the
image on the CD/DVD.

A clean install of WXP SP2 fits on a boootable CD. For a 2005 HP laptop, I
needed to create a bootable DVD-DL to hold the entire contents of the hard
drive prior to its first boot. I have not tried to create a set of CD/DVDs
that must be inserted one after another.

Malke and Richard both have good responses. Let me add ntbackup, which
comes with windows. It will back everything up and create bootable media
for use in a catastrophic crash. Read about it in Help and Support.
It's not installed automaticcaly in the Home version; you have to install
it sepearately.

Even though ntbackup can be installed on XP Home, The ASR function is not
available in XP Home, which is what I believe you're talking about.

I recommend using Acronis True Image Home, version 10, to create a
compressed image of the drive to an external hard drive, connected through
USB, Firewire or eSata. The images can be either full, incremental or
differential, and can be made on a partition or drive basis. It will also
clone drives and do file backup. Restores can be done on a file, partition
or drive basis.
