Is it possible to create personal narration, not musical,
cd's to give to grandchildren, much like we can record
storybooks on tape cassettes?
If so, what equipment is needed and how do I go about it?
Thanks.

Sure can

You can create WAV files using Windows Sound Recorder but these files
could be very large, depending on the quality selected. Better to
create MP3 format files. Suggest using Roxio Easy CD Creator or Nero
software (there are others). This software will give you options for
file formats, sound quality and effects etc., also sound editing.

You could make each chapter a separate file (therefore separate CD
track), or whatever. When you have recorded the MP3 files a "music" CD
can be burned.
