I am a beginner at Frontpage but have a goal to set up a website with an
online community forum. Can anyone advise the best way to do this - what
forum software is compatible with Frontpage and if I need any other type of
software to run it efficiently.

Many thanks

Not a task that is FrontPage related. You could maybe use FrontPage to make
a template, but then you are going to have to put it in your forum software.

FrontPage does not do forums (very well) out of the box, and is not
compatible with any forum software I have ever run across.

Not really with FP, the Discussion feature is very very basic.

But you can use any third party forum/portal package that your host
supports. First you need to find out what your host supports ASP/MS
Sql/Access or PHP/MySql, once you know that you can shop for a forum/portal
package (many are free). Your host may even offer one free or low cost so
check with them first.

"Snitz Forum" is really good, and free, and uses ASP and Access. You can
probably have it up and running in less than an hour.

You would be better going with a forum separate from anything Frontpage can
offer such as www.phpbb.com or www.yabb-forum.com All you need is a server
that can run that particular script (be it ASP, PHP or Perl etc) that allows
such forums (due to the fact that if it is highly used, this will eat into
the host's resources in terms of bandwidth - some place restrictsion on the
sorts of scripts you can run)

Or you can find a remote-hosted forum from a provider that hosts the scripts
and is dedicated to running these. Some are free (advertising on the site)
or pay-for (probably a few $ a month). Remote-hosted forums save you
setting up the script to run yourself. You just sign up and pretty much up
and running immediately.

"Or you can find a remote-hosted forum..."

I run a couple of these on Delphi Forums..you can set up a limited one for
free, or if you pay (not much) you can get the fancy stuff. Very very easy
to setup, and you can link it to your FP web, but you cannot match the look
of your FP web.
