Hi,

I have too many program references listed discretely in Start |
Programs. Some entries are folders containing references and are
displayed with an icon distinct from the icon used in Widows Explorer.

I'd like to create a new one of these special folders, rename it for
my purposes, and then DnD a bunch of references to it, thus reducing
the clutter when I open Start | Programs.

I tried to do this by adding a folder to %HOMEDRIVE%\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs. That didn't work.

Right-click on the Start Button and choose "Explore All Users". This
will give you the familiar two-paned Explorer interface. You will see
all the Start Menus for the users on the system, including the one for
All Users. Open your own Start Menu and create folders and organize it
any way you want. If you want the same structure for everyone, use the
All Users menu. I don't know why you had difficulty before.

Hi Malke,

Perfect guidance. I swear: I opened an Explorer Window, navigated to
the exact same place, and had all kinds of grief. This time it worked
perfectly. And to rub salt in my wounds, this time my old approach
worked perfectly, too.

The only explanation: Septuagenarians shouldn't monkey with computers
or drive cars :-)

Glad you got it sorted. It has nothing to do with age; it was probably
the wrong phase of the moon or something. ;-)

I'll be a septuagenarian in five months. I expect to continue driving

Hi Malke and Ken,

Thanks for the kind words.

I only mention age because I feel apologetic about stumbling on simple
things when I've programming computers since the early Fifites (though
only on paper at first using the instruction set mailed to me by a
friend at Princeton U.)

I retired a month after the 2001 attack because my gov't client cut
the funding for my support contract. I thought it was a "sign."
Nowadays, I'm toying with the idea of again "hanging my shingle out."
I'm slowly ... ever so slowly ... coming up to speed on Ruby/Rails and
C#/DotNet. But I wouldn't so bold were it not for the Internet and
generous souls like you folks who make tackling new technologies seem
possible.
