Creating a new desktop in VC++

I have written a C program which creates a desktop using CreateDesktop() function,opened it and switched to the desktop. When i switched to the new desktop, there appears a blank screen with no start menu,no desktop icons. I create a process explorer.exe .But i am not able to see any such process .I am not able to switch to my working desktop also.I have to reboot my system.
How can i open any application in my new desktop?
