Trying to assist neighbor who is running W2kPro on small 3 machine office network. I installed a USR PCI 56K modem on one workstation about 3 months ago and it worked fine. They recently received some type of system error message prompting them for the system CD-Rom - they put the CD in the drive and the system accessed the drive and the error message was cleared. Now they have lost the interface between the modem and their Earthlink Total Access software. When they click connect in the Earthlink dialog, an error message appears "unable to create a connectoid, xxxxxx not a valid name. The entry name must contain at least one character that is not a space and cannot begin with a period. Choose a different name." The same error message appears on the final screen of the connection wizard when I try to manually create a connectoid to Earthlink through dial-up networking. This issue is addressed by KB article 318183 which recommends reinstalling W2kPro then installing the latest service pack. Yesterday I did a reinstall (overwrite) of W2kPro (with SP-3) but the error still remains. I have removed and reinstalled the modem and the modem responds to modem diagnostics. Device manage confirms the modem "is working properly." I am yet to install SP-4 but I have doubts that will resolve the problem. Downloading and instaling the latest Earthlink Total Access software might address the ISP connection situation but that still leaves the issue of being unable to create a connectoid through dial-up networking which seems to indicate a problem with the OS. Any insight appreciated.
