i am trying to create a new windows xp installation CD for my notebook PC
just in case i need to reimage it. i am not making a dirrect copy of it
though. the new windows installation CD will have special drivers and
updates on it on it so that i will not need multiple restore CDs for it. the
only thing i would like to now is, how do i make the disc bootable so that
it will work like a normal windows installation CD when the PC is booted.
can someone please help me with this?

Perhaps I am being obtuse but how do you make any of the CDs
bootable? Is the MBR installed at some point that I have missed?

Create an ISO image with Ultraiso or similar program.

You can then add or delete any file from it - and therefore replace
the *.sif or *.txt files so that they will be recognized.

The CD will be bootable, as was the original MS CD.

the link with the instructions for how to make the new installation bootable
CD worked. i did some of the basics like adding drivers to it and adding
extra files for other stuff, but now i just need help adding other stuff.
now i want to add hp updates to the installation so that they will be
integrated, but i'm not really sure how to do that.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I have got things
straight now but I would be grateful for comments and correction
of any of my errors. I've never really wanted to get into the
gritty details of Windows and booting a PC :-)

1. I made a "Disaster Recovery iso image" on my hard disc using
my Retrospect backup program and I wanted to use this as a
bootable CD. The "iso image" is a PC file with the extension
..iso.

2. The "iso image" is in a compressed, or possibly condensed,
format that needs to be expanded when being written (is the
accepted term "burn"?) to a CD-R.

3. Thus it is necessary to use something like Nero to make the
CD not the Windows XP "Send To" command that is suitable for
copying files like JPEGs to a CD.

4. The resulting CD-R should be bootable if the BIOS sequence is
set to check CDs before the hard disc.

I followed the above notions and the CD made by Nero Express did
appear to attempt to boot tho' I did not "Press Any Key" since I
did not want to actually start the process of restoring the
hard disc.
