Creating bootable CD-ROM

I am attempting to run some partitioning programs which normally boot and
run from the floppy drive using a CD-ROM instead. (Ie. BootItNG and Ghost)

I don't have a clue how to do this but am confident that it can be done
since my computer can boot from the cd-rom.

I'm posting here in the hope that someone will have at least a clue that can
be shared.

Use Nero (or a program like it) and make an El Torito bootable CD-ROM.

I have done exactly as Dan has. I've got 2 bootable CD's. The second is a
backup of the first. They have all of the above mentioned utilities plus
NTFS Dos, dos drivers for an external zipdrive (I run partition magic from
it because of the writes necessary, copying files from hard drives that are
not bootable), hard drive utilities from most of the major manufacturers,
and a Dos commands folder with just about every dos command there is. TIP:
These dos commands version must be the same as the version that created the
image that was used to boot the computer. Some will work, but some will
version conflict. So, it's best to use the same. In other words, if you use
a Win98SE boot disk, use the Dos commands from a Win98SE machine
(\Windows\Command). You can create one heck of a boot disk/utility disk.

Btw, I kinda cheated making my bootable CD. I made a bootable ISO image of a
Win98SE CD with WinISO (great program). Took all the Win98SE files out of
the ISO image with WinISO. Then put in all the stuff I wanted and saved the
ISO image under a different image name. Then took Nero and burned the image
to a CD. Done. The only advantage I can see from doing it this way is it
takes the floppy out of the picture. So, you don't need a boot floppy, or
have to deal with possible floppy errors.

You might want to experiment on a CDRW until you get the process sorted
out. The way it's supposed to work with Nero 5.5:

- insert a known good Win98 boot floppy in drive A:

- start Nero, which will present you with a "New Compilation" window

- in left pane, select "CD-ROM (Boot)"

- Nero will check disk in drive A: and under Boot tab will preselect
"Bootable logical drive", drive "A:\1 MB"

- click [New] button on right side to get to the main compilation
screen

- drag/drop any other files you want included on the CD

- click [Burn] button and then [Write]

- Nero burning dialog will come up with "Writing to Cache",
"BOOTIMAGE", and will start reading from drive A:. After the bootimage
is cached, the actual CD burning will commence.

Now, if you say this is what you've done but it's not working right,
then I recommend you hop on over to alt.comp.periphs.cdr and ask the
Nero experts there for some help.

When you say no success, do you mean it does not boot or that it boots, but
you cannot see the rest of the contents on the CD? To access the rest of
the CD, you must load a DOS CD driver and MSCDEX in your config.sys and
autoexec.bat.

I mean that my system ignores the presence of the CD-ROM and that I cannot
read the CD-ROM. (I have no trouble creating non-bootable CD-ROMs, data or
music.) The floppy being copied does have access to CDs, loading several CD
drivers and CSCDEX through the config.sys and autoexec.bat files.

Thanks for the suggestion to use CD-RWs. Last time I tried the time required
to reformat (clean) a used CD-RW was more than 15 minutes so I guess I'll
keep burning up CD-Rs. I don't care to spend the time refreshing used
CD-RWs. Admittedly, this was years ago. Perhaps that is no longer needed or
is faster than it used to be.

This might help
http://www.bink.nu/Bootcd/
It worked for me. Just make sure the nero settings are right.
