How is best to create a TEST version of the site (leaving the original
unmodified version intact). I can't test locally as it uses server side .php.

Previously, (using IE) I have created a 'TEST' folder (in the root) and
ftp'd all the files under it. But I don't see how to create a (remote)
folder using F'page and if I could, how do I publish to this folder (and not
the real site)?

PS - I obviously can't afford to experiment or make a mistake and wipe out
the original !!

Thanks, but I don't see anywhere in the help how to "create a subweb on the
hosted site". Only how to design a subweb.

Let me restate the problem:
I designed in Fp a site, published it and it works A OK.
I now have modified it, and need to test it, leaving the original site intact.
Once it has passed the test, I will then publish it to the 'live' site.

First of all, your host must allow subwebs. Some don't. And, many require
that they set it up. So contact your host, and tell them the name of the
subweb. Then, once it's set up, File | Publish and input the proper URL,
http:www.mywebsite.com/nameofsubweb

is nothing special about such a folder.

Is this right?

My orginal Question - was how is best to test modified code. Don't all
professional developers have this issue? or do others not test!!

I just create a folder called "testing", and put all work into that folder.

I use my own server and create/destroy virtual servers as required.
Without a server, I would create a subweb on my hosted site, and use
that for testing.

If your host regards a subweb as "Microsoft mumbo talk" I would
seriously consider a new host.
A subweb is a folder - but in conjunction with FP extensions and
FrontPage, it has properties that make it special.
FrontPage treats a subweb as a completely independant website
(although root-relative links will fail in a subweb). Publishing to a
subweb does not affect anything in the main web (or any other subweb)
and vice versa. If it were an ordinary folder, you could not do this
without a lot of manual intervention. There are other benefits
regarding FP navigation components and Search component (if used) and
unique permissions, which can be easily set up using FP if the host
allows this.
