I wanted to create a restore point and found that the radio button for
creating a restore point is gone. I'm using WinXp with NO service packs (not
my machine) and I'm hunting down viruses. Any idea how I can either get the
button back or create restore points without this button? Thanks

If you're that far back you may as well re-install and then update all the
way through SP2.

go here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

try this: 278. Restore/Enable System Restore - Undo

and this

line 289>>second column Restore System Restore Service

and to create a new restore point use this VBS script (just run it)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...storepoint.vbs

372. Quick Restore Point

Hi,

I would suggest cleaning the system of all infection.

Read this Announcement and follow it's instructions.
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=4075

Then post a HiJackThis log to this forum.
AumHa HiJackThis Forum:
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30

Install SP2.

Then look at System Restore.

Yes I kind of wondered about why this program was never updated. This
computer is a business machine used to looking up automotive info. The guy
got this with the software pre-installed. Wipe out the drive and the software
he needs goes with it so I've been treading lightly attempting to restore
this machine without killing it. So far so good, i'm down to one last virus
called "startdrv.exe" This one has been bad keeps poping up even when I smash
it down. I've gone through the registry and took out everything I could find
and still it pops up. It messes up the hosts files and tries to "call home"
I've been picking away at this little critter but it just hangs in there.
I've discovered some scanners like SDFIX, Combofix and drweb-cureit. Before
I run these I would like to back up things even if the backups have a virus.
As it is I'm sure learning allot.

well I've hunted most of them down only got one left. Startdrv.exe is the wee
beasty that keeps comming back. Haven't been able to squash that one yet but
its been fun trying. Often these viruses change settings or delete files or
reg settings that control things like the Create Restore Point Radio button.
What I need is to find out what in the reg controls this button and see if
its still intact.
