How to create a partition on an external USB drive?

Toshiba Tablet XP Home/Student with plenty of memory. I have the
program DriveImage XML. At one point it says to create a partition
somewhere for the image it's going to create. I have a 40G external
plug and play HD. I'd like to create a partition on it without
disturbing other files and folders I have on it. There's plenty of
free space. Various resources say use XP Disk Management to create
that partition. So when I go there it appears as they say but when
they say click on the free space choose the selection "Create new
partiton." I have right clicked everywhere in that program on the
USBHD gui and no where do I get a create new partition. I get OPEN/
EXPLORE / CHANGE DRIVE LETTER AND PATHS / FORMAT / DELETE PARTITION /
PROPERTIES / HELP. I was hoping to put an image there of my laptops
drive C that could be restored, an exact copy with all programs etc.
ERU NT doesn't serve me, I've tried that so this seems to be the way.
Any help that is understandable to a moderate tech user here? Thanks
so much. jack

Subdividing a current partition will require a third party partition
manager. Visit google for options.

you can repartition the drive
with a program like acronis
disk director.

however, if you made images
then the easiest to do is to
create a folder on the ext
drive and simply call it
with something like xml
disk images.

then create sub folders with
the dates your images are
made.

then simply copy your images
from the main hard drive into
the special folders mentioned
above.

If you can see the words "Delete Partition" then you're obviously not
clicking on free space. You're clicking on a partition that is already
allocated. Have a look at this link
http://www.4shared.com/file/20323180.../DiskMgmt.html to see what a
free partition looks like. I have circled it in red so that you can see what
I mean. Download the file to get a better resolution, and ignore the German
wording.

Note also that you do NOT need an unallocated partition for DriveImage to
create an image file. You need a lot of free space on an allocated
partition.

Your problem is primarily that you are mistakenly trying to *create* a
partition. You can't "create" a partition unless there is
unpartitioned space on the drive. Since you presumably don't have any
unpartitioned space, what you need to do is *change* the existing
partition of the drive, not create a partition.

So if the existing partition structure is just a single partition,
what you want to do is subdivide that partition and make two
partitions out of it.

Sorry to focus on correcting your use of the terminology, but it's
apparently your misunderstanding of if it that's leading you astray.

So how to make two partitions out of one? Windows XP has no capability
to do that. You need a third-party program to do. Norton Ghost is one
such program, and there are other freeware or shareware choices such
as Boot-It Next Generation.

Your external hard drive is not very large. There is a good chance it
won't be large enough for what you are looking to do. Please answer the
following questions so we can know for sure:

How large is your Toshiba tablet hard drive? How many partitions does it
have? And how much data is currently on each partition? How much free
space?

How many partitions do you have on your external drive? How much
unallocated space is there? (Use Windows Disk Management to find out.)
How much data do you have in the partitions? How much free space?

Also, what file system does it use? FAT32 or NTFS?
