We are about to swap our IMAP mail server with Exchange. Everything is
going swimmingly, EXCEPT that we are using the Office Res Kit (2003) to
change everyone's Outlook settings. We create a new profile with the
Exchange settings in. We set the OST file to be on a DFS network share
(\\waterline.co.uk\Office\Newport Mail\%Username%\Outlook.ost). This
works fine for the first PC that a user logs into, however, any
subsequent PCs that they log into presumably check if that file exists,
see that it does and creates the Outlook.ost file on the local drive
(C:\Documents and Settings\%Username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Outlook.ost).

This is a pain, since, if people change PCs permanently, we want their
OST file to still be on the server! I was under the impression it
should just create an Outlook1.ost on the same network share... Is
there any way to force it to do this?

I'd be surprised if network-hosted OSTs are any more supported that PSTs.
You could wind up destroying or corrupting the OST.

The ,ost file is meant to live on the local drive since it is most often
used for laptops that travel. The .ost keeps a local copy of the mailbox
for users to synch when they return to the network. An .ost file on a
network is about as useful as Just for Men to Mr. Clean.
