How to create new element for XML file?

I have a .XML file in a project (solution). With that file open, I click
the XML menu item and "create schema". Now I open the schema file, which
has all the different elements defined. I right click in an empty area and
select add | new element. I type in "CurrentVersion" and then tab down to
the second row. I select Element, type in "CurrentVersionElement" and put
it as a string. Then I save.

Now when I go back to the XML file and type the open carrot symbol "<", I
only see the existing elements but not the new one I just added. It seems I
need to link this new addition some how.

Any suggestions?
