In FP2003 - I have followed instructions to do this from MS website below
but the image does not display correctly. Counter works fine if I use
included FP images. What am I doing wrong?

The width of the image *must* be evenly divisible by 10. eg, the image
needs to be 120 or130 or 140 pixels wide.

The image is 200 pixels wide - or do you mean I have to measure each number?
Not sure how to do that in Paint Shop Pro 6 if so????

I think I get it now - but what I made is still ugly - I have to add each
number as a layer to the main counter.gif and I did. It kinda loaded on the
web but not all numerals showed. Even tho I have each number gif 20 pixels
wide, when I layer them I'm not sure that spacing is maintained! How can I
determine that?

Imagine the counter gif image as 10 equal cells, each with a number centered
in the cell, starting at 0 and ending with 9.

Not sure if I understand what you mean by layering them.
I have made them by simply typing 0123456789 in the font and font size of my
choice on a background that matches the page background. Then taking a
screen shot, saving it and then editing ( cutting out ) the section with the
numbers using Paint, so you can rotate the image and trim the ends as
needed, then converting it to a gif image.

Also in an image editor a 200 pixel gif actually starts at position 0 and
ends at position 199. So 0-19 would contain the number 0, 20-39 would
contain the number 1, etc

After several attempts at making one myself, and having the digits appear overlapped - even though the overall .gif was divisible by 10, I was finally able to make one that worked correctly.

I did it in photoshop, by placing a layout grid...then made sure each digit was aligned equally...it was a pain...but I did it in layers 0-9 so you can position each digit. Of course you have to work in format that supports layers (a .gif DOESNT)...once I had the digits equalized I flattened the layers and THEN saved it as a .gif.

OR...you could use an existing counter as a template then delete that layer.

OR...there are a couple of really good websites that have free counter gifs to use...some good, some incredibly stupid or ugly :-) Google it, you may find one to your liking.
