When I try to select 3 columns of data (the first column representing
the x-coordinates, the second the y-coordinates, and the third the
function value (i.e. z-coordinate)), and create a surface graph,
something weird happens and excel doesn't create a 3D graph. Does
anyone know how to create a 3D surface graph from this kind of data?

Excel isn't great when it comes to 3-d charts. I tried a number of different
chart types and the best I found was for you data choose the custom tab in
the Chart Type wizard, then choose Cones. This is a 3-D chart where excel
gives yo a series of tiny cones to give you 3-D data.

Hi,

You need to set your data up differently if you want to use a surface plot -
run the x axis values down column A, for example. But run the y axis values
across a row, for example, Row 1. Put the values for the data points at the
intersection of these row and column axis figures. In the example below
column A has X-axis value row 1 the y axis values and the data point are in
the range B2:C4 ....

A B C ....
1 3 10 12
2 5 1.24 2.43
3 7.5 3.1 5.2
4 8.8 6.12 6.1

Excel 2007
Pivot Table generates a better 3D surface chart.
But you have to have more data points than
you provided.
Fitting your data to an impulse or normal distribution curve
can fill in the entire Pivot Table.
