I have a reasonably complex workbook (multiple sheets /
macros) that crashes periodically upon closing and
saving. Error message displayed is "EXCEL.EXE has
generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will
need to restart the program. An error log is being
created."

The Dr Watson log contains the following info:

Application exception occurred:
App: (pid=788)
When: 12/30/2003 @ 10:09:35.189
Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

Problem is that the error is difficult to replicate
consistently. I have not been able to determine a pattern
of actions that cause this error and the error does not
occur every time.

Also, when the workbook is reopened, all have been
properly saved and things seem to function OK.

Running Excel 2000 under Windows 2000. Other users have
experienced problem with Excel 97. I have not seen the
problem when running the workbook in Excel 2000 on my
Windows XP machine.

Help much appreciated.
