I've got a rogue program that periodically puts my CPU usage up to 100%
and screws the computer.

Is there a freeware monitor that can tell me what program is using what
proportion of the CPU?

Process Explorer. However, since I don't know what version of Windows
you're using, you'll need to locate the appropriate version here:

http://www.sysinternals.com/

On the other hand, it sounds to me like you might have a virus, Trojan,
BHO of some kind or something else. You should try running Hijack This:

http://www.merijn.org/

and then asking, at one of the various forums available for analyzing
the results, which programs to disable and remove.

If you're running without a firewall, Kerio makes a good free one:

http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html

although some of the (less important) features disable after a while.

Thanks for this John -- and to Gary. I'll give hem all a try.

I *hope* I haven't got a virus. I run a firewall, virus check, Spobot
S&D, AdAware, Hijack This, Spyware Blaster and -- as a monitor --
Starter. And I'm fairly sure I can identify what all of my processes
are. Even so, viruses can be sneaky things so I don't rule them out.

Starter is my essential program. It's a startup monitor but it also
monitors current processes and applications. When deciding on
comparable software I can see which ones use the most resources and when
a program or process starts to eat up all my resources, I can terminate
it using starter.
