Hello folks,
I am having a problem with Windows XP professional. It appears that
after my screensaver comes on my CPU Usage is going to 100%. I've
checked for spyware, viruses, trojans, unusual things in the startup/
startup registry and the like but don't see anything. I think the
problem is that dfrgntfs.exe is running at a priority of 99 though not
taking up much memory(around 8500k). I saw another post on this but
there was no resolution I could find. The only thing that I can think
that changed recently were that I updated my ATI driver though I'm not
sure how that would affect this. I tried msconfig but didn't see how
or why this process is starting up and staying started. My next move
is going to be disabling a couple services I don't think I need.

Turn off your screen saver. They don't "save" the screen anyway.

Hi - I had this exact issue; it's related to the screen saver/power options.

1st - sign in as admin/administrator: in Control Panel, go to "Power
Options".

Under the "Advanced" tab make sure "Prompt for pasword....." is unchecked.
Click ok.

This seems to have fixed my problem.

What in Hades has the screen saver got to do with defragging?!dfrgntfs.exe
is a defrag module - it has nothing whatsoever to do with the screensaver.
Do some homework before posting. This module is related to Diskkeeper and
runs when the system is idle for disk maintenance purposes.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with the screensaver - how on earth will
turning off the screensaver disable a third party disk management app?!

I just tried this as well with no success. I also disabled my
screensaver and let the computer sit idle for a while. After an hour
or so that process was running again and my CPU is maxed out.
Anyone....please help...

FYI all,
In case anyone is having this problem with XP I suggest the following
steps as it solved my issue.

-Delete all spy-ware/ad-ware.
-Disable an unneeded startup programs.
-Run chkdsk against each drive twice. (I think this did it)
-setup defrag nightly using a bat file run through scheduler using -F
option to force it through.(I hope this should keep it from happening
again.)
