CPU temp too high

I'm currently running an Athlon 1800+ xp chip on an ASUS A7V333 motherboard.

I've been noticing lately that my CPU temp is higher than it used to be
before. It's currently sitting at 78 C. I believe before it used to be
around 62 C. This is true even when my CPU is less than 5% usage.

I'm suspecting it's the power supply (generic). Should I consider something
else before I go out and by a new power supply?

Also, what good power supply should I get? 300W, 350W, or 400W. Does it
matter if it has one or two fans? Any advice would be greately appreciated.

Thanks.

Really not a software issue !

But -I would try opening the case and using canned air to clean the
fans first :-)

Then I would try a better fan/heat sink for the processor.

The power supply is not theproblem.

Probably an issue with the heatsink. make sure the heatsink has heat
conducting coumpound between it and the CPU, the fins are clean the fan
has unobstructed airflow and the heatsink is still firmly attached to
the CPU. The powersupply is NOT an issue.

and make sure there is only a thin layer of schmootz (grease) between the
cpu core, and the HSF. and i do mean thin. Its all about thermal
transferrance, and the only reason the schmootz is needed is because the
bottom of the HSF is not a perfectly smooth surface. The schmootz is there
to fill in the tiny gaps which otherwise adversely affect the thermal
transfer process.
