Hello,

I am having Sony Vaio laptop (1.6 GHz, 80 GB hard disk and 1 GB RAM). Since
3 months, I am facing major issues. Whenever I start browing (IE or Opera or
Firefox) or even when connect external hard disk (to copy data to my laptop),
CPU shoots to 100% and stays there making my machine dead slow.
Finally I did teh following:
1) Did the complete system restore and now laptop is set to factory setting
with no extra software and all 80 GB free. So it is as good as new system
2) also increaded RAM to 1 GB from initial 512 MB
3) have done all performance related task like Defragmentation, Disk
cleenup. OI guess since its a fresh system recovery, so no need of doing this.
4) Have Mcafee running on my machine and no virus threat detected.
5) All drivers are up to date

Finally I found something related to my issue on microft support site.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890582/en-us
This was the exact problem what I was facing and I upgraded my windows XP
Professional SP2 to latest SP3 patch. STILL THE SAME OLD PROBLEM PERSITS.
Any solution would be really be appreciated.

Regards
Pank

Which process is using the CPU cycles? Do you have an HP printer?

This is my home system adn I just use this for internet. Problem is whenever
I connect to internet and run any sites, CPU memory shoots to 100%
irrespective of which browser I use (IE, Firefox, Opera). CPU cycles shows
the process of browser which I am connected to (If Internet explorer, then
IEXPLORER.exe > 90%)

David, also I do have another office laptop which works absolutely fine on
the same internet connection. I have even tried to connect my home laptop
directly to LAN but no improvement. So I guess, internet provider is not thye
problem (I am having 7MB hogh speed connection).

Yes, you told us that already, but you didn't provide the info I asked for.
CPU usage at 100% tells us nothing useful, you need to open task manager and
see which process is causing that usage, or even better, download and run
process explorer and look for the process causing the problem.

Hello,

FInally I am feeling better as I found the cause. No process was casing any
problem. I tried process explorer also to find the culprit.
Finally I read some thread on in internet and did the dusting of my Laptop.
Though there was not much dust inside my laptop, however after cleaning the
fan and oiling, boosts up my CPU performance. This was because on overheating
the processor and now online videos like youtube.com is running smoothly. I
am going to buy one good laptop cooler now.

Thanks for your help.

Did you say oiling? Cleaning was a good idea, oiling was not.
