Hi all

at a fare a saw an A-brand PC, with a little wire from the heatsink to , I
think, the chassis.

Is this absolutly UNneccesary, or is this a good idea

TIA

Unnecesary. If you are conducting elecricity through your heatsink
you have bigger problems to worry about. Are you sure what you saw
wasn't a temperature sensor? There are quite a few cases now days
that come with the ability to detect temps and they use a little wire
with a tempature diode on the end.

They saw you eyeing that heatsink... it was a theft-prevention
system.

Heatsinks don't need grounded. Perhaps they feared it would come
off during transit, or perhaps you didn't get a close enough look
and the wire was actually for the fan or a thermal sensor?

I've just scrapped (bad caps) a HP e-pc e-vectra S10 and yes, its CPU
heatsink is grounded! I too was puzzled at first but then thought maybe in
some countries regulations demand grounding of every metal part of a
consumer product or possibly to prevent static build-up?

Did the CPU use a thermal pad, or did it use thermal paste?
