CPU heat/cooling question

I have an Intel Pemtium 4 3.4GHz HT with prescott core on an intel D865GLC
motherboard.

I am using the stock Intel heatsink/fan combo on the processor with a
normal sized rear case fan on the rear connected to one of the motherboard
case fan headers.
I am using intel active monitor to monitor the system.
Given this processor and motherboard, what values should I be looking for
as far as temperature and CPU fan speed goes?
Will the "default settings" provided by intel active monitor warn me before
anything bad happens?

Does this CPU have the feature where it will shut down automatically before
it gets hot enough to cause damage?
If the CPU is hotter than it should be, what can I do to make it cooler?
