Using an Inspiron 2200. I have a 1.4GHz processor (Intel Celeron M). I use
WinXP Home. 20GB hard drive (I know it's small but I have 300+ GB worth of
externals, but that's besides the point, or is it?). 1.24GB of RAM. I have
every spyware and adware program on earth (the legit ones like Ad-aware and
Spyware Sweeper) and I run them regularly. I have a paid subscription to
Norton Internet Security, and I use it. I defrag and empty my temp files
regularly. I usually have Adobe Photoshop CS2 (and work with very large
graphics), Microsoft Outlook, AIM and a web browser or two open regularly
with my high speed internet connected. Task Manager tells me on average I
have 35-45 processes running at any given time.

My CPU usage is usually at 100%, which is NOT right. In task manager the
process that is hogging anywhere from 95-100% of my CPU is explorer.exe

EVERYTHING I do lately takes forever to load, and sometimes just locks up.
Especially when using Outlook, and when loading large files into Adobe. It's
getting really bad and I don't know what to do to speed things up. Buy and
install a better processor? Is it a virus? My drivers? Should my on-board
hard drive be larger? Memory optimizer programs don't really do the trick,
but something tells me that my memory isn't a problem and that it is my CPU
and explorer.exe

PLEASE HELP!

Justin,

I can tell you right now, 35-45 processes is an awful lot for an Intel
Celeron M processor. Try looking over the programs that are in use and
eliminate them from loading up in "msconfig." I would bring the amount of
processes that are running to about 20-25. Your CPU is being overworked and
a big part is your processes.

Same here... I'm not sure but If I try to open a folder which one contains media files, it happens. explorer.exe consumes %100 cpu
and eats a lot of RAM. It takes 10~20 minutes.

45 processes is not a lot and is quite irrelevant.

Most processes will sit idle most of the time, consume little memory and
spring into life only when needed.

My system has 48 processes at the moment, I am running much and is working
100%. CPU sits around 1% when I am not typing.

In amongst those processes I have AV, anti spyware, firewall, and the stock
default system services + several laptop style add ons and others...

CPU @ 100% is not right - use Task Manager to see what is conuming CPU and
start there.

you may be working successfully at 48 processes, but do you have an Intel
Celeron M processor? If you have a Pentium M chip, that's like comparing
oranges & apples.

The fact of the matter is, when your CPU is running at 100%, that's the sign
of too many processes for that processor.

He did not say what 35-45 processes he's running.

Even better, try the SysInternals Process exlplorer.
It can show you what do the offending processes.

absolute rubbish. he could have 200 processes & if they are coded correctly
his/her system may be itting idle as well.

It only takes 1 rogue process - virus or scumware to bring the show
down.Again, the number of processes is irrelevant.

BTW: it is programs uch as this that are likely to cause the poblem in the
first place:
"Memory optimizer"
as they are usually gimicks to carry scumware.
