Counter Question

Afternoon,

Do the simple basic counters (ie the newbie one I have
installed) tick over just when the page is loaded, or also
when a link on my page is clicked?

I am curious to get more of a feel as to what traffic I am
getting.

I know I should get a proper statistics software
package/script, but the free ones I have seen all require
banners to be placed on web site (which I dont want), &
I'm not yet at the stage where I need the professional (ie
pay for) statistics software. Also, my server will not
allow me to run PHP on my web plan.

Cheers

It count any time the page is loaded or refreshed.
