FrontPage 2003 (11.6356.6408) SP1 - Double click on a file, and it gives me
this error message:
"Couldn't open file C:\WINDOW\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\FrontPageTempDir\6714b221.html."
Microsoft admits that this is a problem, but other than shutting down
FrontPage and restarting it, I can not find a solution. Some times it will
not happen for hours, then it will happen frequently the rest of the day. I
power off at the end of each day, so maybe that cleans up something...

Download FPcleaner from www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and run the
Clear Temporary Files and Clear Web Cache files routines.

When? Once? Once a day every day? Only after it happens? Can't I just go to a
directory and delete the files rather than run a mysterious program who knows
how often?

Sometimes this can be resolved just by shutting down FP then bringing it
back up again. If not, the file it refers to is corrupt. You simply need
to go to that Temp Directory and delete the whole thing. You can delete
everything in this directory at anytime. Close FrontPage first.

You could us FP Cleaner, I've never tried that (but I will look into it
too). The thing to remember is that the Temp folder can be completely
deleted with no harm to your computer or the software it runs. Frontpage
will simply recreate the files/folders it needs the next time you bring it
up (and that goes with all other software applications that use the Temp
Directory).

Yes you can find an delete them yourself
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Usually 1&2 should be run before reopening FP after any FP Web /site or publishing errors
- doesn't do any harm to do it more frequently

Nothing mysterious about it.
It simply does in seconds with a click of a button or two, what it will
take you five minutes to do poking around with Windows Explorer.

I put a shortcut on my toolbar that goes to the temp folder.
One click and I'm there. Then delete everything... even if not FP related.
