Could XP be causing this?

I have an HP laptop with XP. I used to use an external monitor but it
started saying "no signal" and stopped working. After Office 2007 ran some
diagnostics (probably unrelated) when I rebooted the computer the external
monitor started working and mirrored the laptop screen, apparently working
again. Once the boot-up process started Windows the monitor again said "no
signal" and stopped working again. (All of this with the laptop open).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance... Bob

I hate to ask, but you know that most laptops have a keystroke to switch
between internal, then external , then both monitors. Its possible its
just switched off, I get the same thing when not in the right mode.

whim, Bob Newman pounded out on the keyboard:

Hi Bob,

Could be a cable. Or your video card settings are getting switched.

Hi Bob,

From a previous post:

To use the FN and F5 you must use the laptop keyboard not an external
keyboard.

You can also activate the monitor by going to Control Panel -> Display ->
and the Settings tab. There you should see both monitors and if you right
click on it you should be able to enable the external monitor. Additional if
you click on Advanced you should get additional video card options that you
can use to specify what you have connected and how to use it; ie. clone or
extension.

And if you have the manual, which you can also download, it will give you
specific instructions that deal with your exact model and video drivers.
