Hi all,

I need to import literally 3000 contacts into Outlook. Unfortunately, the
list (in plain text) looks like the list on the bottom of my message (small
example). I'm faced So, clearly, the data is not in a databaserecordformat
(with fields from the left to the right). Thus, I can not assign headers to
it (in Outlook), and thus I can not map the fields during the import into
Outlook. I know I can use "transpose" in Excel to change rows into columns,
but this still requires a lot of manual work: I have to select each block,
Edit/Copy, Edit/Paste Special/Transpose. With 3000 contacts I'm not happy to
do so, since it may cause the RSI-problems very easily. So, could anybody
recommend a solution to my problem? I would really, really, really
appreciate this (!).

Easiest method for seeing what you need to do...

Create a couple of contacts in Outlook - populate all relevant fields. Then
Export it to a .txt format and a .csv format. See how each format is
configured. Massage your file into the proper format and then import.

I've scripted solutions for merchants needing to reformat and transfer
contact information back and forth between their desktop database and
their shopping cart database. If you're in business hiring somebody to
script a solution may be your most effective choice...

The point is not that I don't know the recordformat; the point IS about
"massaging" as you call it: how to avoid manually manipulating the data in
the right format? Do you have a suggestion for that?

Without a standardized format, about the only way to convert this data is to massage it by hand or write code to try to parse it. Not an easy task in either case. If both the data and your time are value, you may want to consider paying for outside help.

Hi Sue,

The data IS in standardformat; see the example below. It is even possible to
get all the fields of the records in separate lines. The point is that they
should be in columns, because you have to add headers. And the second point
is that sometimes a field has the value "empty".

Hi Clinton,

I would, if I am in business. I need the data to perform a survey for my
thesis: it's scientific use only. I need to import the data in Outlook in
order to be able to send these about 3000 companies a survey via email. So,
as is allways the case with scientific research: the money :-(.

Instead of "standard" format, I should have said "rigidly structured." Because some "fields" are multiple lines and some are empty, it's not possible to consider it rigidly structured.

As I said, your items below probably *could* be parsed programmatically, but it will take some work and a fair amount of testing.
