This seems to be a very stubborn problem. I think once I saw articles
that say SP3 or SP4 already fixes the bug, but I still get this error in
Event Log. I have SP4 and all latest hotfixes installed for all Windows
2000 boxes.

I also occasionally experience very *long* time of logoff. It's just
unbearable.

Is there any way or thirdparty fix for this?

Thanks for replying. I have this tool, but don't like it to take up my
memory.

Well, User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
is *the* solution and (here) consumes a whopping 612KB....

start
run
type
gpedit.msc

navigate to

Computer Configuration
Administrative Templates
System
Logon

Maximum retries to unload and update user profile ...

set enabled and to say 5 ... default if not configured is 60!!
(the error may still persist but shutdown will be faster)

you can also try

Start
Run
type
net stop spooler
click OK

before shutdown

also see

http://support.microsoft.com/default...roduct=win2000

in particular

"User Profile Hive Cleanup Service"
