I don't know much about computers, what could the
problem be if my computer seems to just freeze up
sometimes? The mouse does not seem to respond, it's not
batteries in mouse, this happens at least once a day, I
can press Ctrl,Alt Delete and still no response, Escape
does not help either, the only thing I can do is reboot
and I don't think that can be good.
Would this be a problem with the software or the computer
itself? What can I do to keep this from happening?
Any help would be appreciated?

Don't want to scare you, but I had a similar problem, and it was,
apparently, my hard drive causing it.
Eventually, the drive died suddenly.
If you think the problem is hardware, you can take it for a thorough test in
a shop. they make the hard disc work its hardest and look for errors, etc.
Perhaps they can test the other components, like memory, at the same time.
If you are unable to attribute the problem to software, I strongly recommend
the test.
And, one other thing, see if the computer case is getting warm. Whereas the
monitor generates a lot of heat, your computer case should not be
particularly warm. Weak or malfunctioning fans could contribute to
overheating.

Saw the last response and that was all good but you will only get really
generic answers from this forum until you give us more info. I can see
you're a newbie and will try to help as much as possible. we've all been
there. Do you know anything about your system? Brand name? Operating
System (XP or PRo)? Size of Hard drive, partions, RAM? Is it a 1.6 Ghz
athlon or celeron etc. Do you have other things attached like printers
(especially HP) Are you running McAfee or Norton anti-virus. They're both
RAM hogs. Sounds like you are using wireless mouse. Personally, I never
did like those though everyone around me has one. Look for similar posts on
this forum with answers by some the MVP's. (Gods in layman terms). Also go
to www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/xp_notes.htm . If you don't know your
system, got www.majorgeeks.com and find system utilities or diagnostics,
(can't remember which) and download a program called Aida32. It will tell
you everything you need to know about your box.

It might be a virus, virusses do these kind of things. Get
yourself some virusscanner software from a retailer near
you, it's never bad to have a virusscanner, even if you
don't have a virus, so it won't be a waste of money.

Make the scanner scan your entire harddrive(s). If the
system hangs again during a virusscan, try running your
computer in Safe Mode (reboot and repeatedly press F8
until a menu comes up) and run the virusscanner there.
