What could make XP default to advanced option menu at every startup?

Hi,

I can't figure this: XP always starts in the safe mode option menu then
proceed to Welcome screen (normal windows mode) to close normaly on exit.

When this started, XP had become to be very slow and took for ever to open
the explorer window. Using MSCONFIG and selective startup, it was traced
to Windows Image Aquisition (WIA) service. It was disabled in SERVICES.MSC
and Explorer use returned to normal.

Yet, XP keeps defaulting to the Advance Option Menu (black screen) at
every startup. I uninstall and reinstall an update driver for the Nvidia
screen driver. It didn't help much.

/SAFEBOOT is NOT selected for BOOT.INI in MSCONFIG. What else can be the
source of XP booting to advance menu option (black screen) at every
startup? Eveything else seems to work fine on this PC although a bit slow.

Thanks in advance
