Suddenly, when I try to save a PowerPoint 2000 file (no
matter how small) I am told that "an unexpected error
occured: I/O error 6" I can find no clue as to what this
means, expect that the system feels there is not enough
memory to complete the operation.

Anybody have a clue what's going on here?

See the following:

"An unexpected error occurred - I/O Error 0" or "An unexpected error
occurred - I/O Error 6"

Aha! Talk about inscrutable ... but the link provided
what I needed and the fix seems to have worked. I assume
that I'll never know how I found myself in the problem?

By using a computer. ;-)

That pretty much covers most computer problems I know of.

By using a computer. ;-)

translates into computer terms as

01000001 01111000 00011111 01110100
01110010 01101000 01101101 01100110
00011111 01100000 00011111 01100010
01100110 01101100 01101111 01110100
01110011 01100100 01110001 00101101
10011111 00011111 00111010 00101100
00101000

Can you find which number I made wrong? It could be that the
one-in-10-billion chance that a computer might misread a number happened.

Don't worry about it unless it becomes a habit.

If I stare at it long enough, I can read "The Walrus is Dead" (backwards)
