Corrupted Index File

How can one remove the index.dat file IE6 uses for the internet history?
Norton Fast and Safe Cleanup reports 6 files in the history file even though
it's supposed to have deleted the history files. According to a kb article
from
Symantec this is probably caused by a corrupted index file.

Any help will be appreciated.
James

Log on as a different user and you will be able to delete the index.dat
files for other accounts. Be aware that these will be recreated as soon as
the users log on again. The file is used to keep track of local history as
well as internet history and it helps in the management of offline files.

I believe that the Symantec article could be incorrect. It is not unusual
for Explorer to show multiples on this file because:
-- there is more than one. At the very least, one in each: TIF, Cookies
and, if used, another in offline files.
-- Explorer does not show a true folder representation of the
cache/history folders. Think of these folders as mini programs within
Explorer. They create a "representation" of the cache instead of a true
file/folder listing. Some of those duplicates are "smoke" created by this
representation.

There are IE newsgroups on this server where you could ask for more
information about index.dat and IE6.

System Security Suite (3S) is a program designed to remove internet tracks

clear Internet Explorer Cache, delete index.dat Files, clear Typed URLs,

No problem, James. I think that your index.dat files are okay but it sure
doesn't hurt to check with the IE experts.

Take care,
