Hi,

A friend has asked me to look at her PC as she can't access certain web
sites, microsoft updates for e.g. It's XP home with SP2 (recently added by
myself); I've done a full AV scan with AVG (latest definitions), adaware &
spybot scans & also posted a HijackThis log to a forum, which came back as
being clean. I've also lowered the browser security settings & upgraded to
version 6 but all to no avail. Does anyone have any other ideas, if not is
it possible to clear out IE & install it again, any help greatly
appreciated? I don't want to format!

Don't know if my post will help at all, but I've also recently been having
issues with IE6 connecting to anything. Started having the problem after I
ran some software for removing spyware/adware. I believe it removed a little
more in IE6 than I wish it had, so I'm particularly interested in any
directions on how to go about uninstalling/reinstalling IE6 from scratch, to
ensure I have a full/clean version of everything the browser needs.

You do not mention the version of Windows you have, so I'll provide a
general array of information:
Try the following and see if it helps:

"Removal of some types of spyware can leave damaged Winsock keys in the
Registry. Spywares use the Layered Service Providers (LSP), which are small
pieces of software that can be added or inserted into the Winsocks. Data
outward bound from your computer to a legitimate destination on the
Internet, can be intercepted by an LSP and sent somewhere other than where
you intend it to go".

Thus, to correct the above, download and run the programs below:

(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

Is there any way you can check your IE6 to see if it is all there properly?
I ran a sfc/scannow and it ran for 10 minutes and stopped.

Are you sure you entered the command correctly? Or is the way you show it
here a typo?

You have here sfc/scannow

It should be sfc /scannow - with a space between the sfc and the /scannow,
not all together. Is that how you actually had it.? If not try it again
with the space. Also, if you have XP take a look at the following:

There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives:

With XP you need to go to Start>Run and type cmd to get the command prompt,
then type in "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes, and notice the space
between the c and the /.)

Have your XP CD handy and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it
takes a while. This will do the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP, and a
lot more, that is find any corrupt system files and replace them. It
does not, however, re-register the various software components (except
possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

The new version of Zone Alarm causes this problem also. I finally
had to turn it off in order to do any surfing at all. IE works
fine without ZA running.

Yes...the Zone Alarm Pro can cause some connection problems with IE, images
not displaying on websites and preventing animation from working.
