Corrupted icons

A relative has an icon problem.
XP Home - fairly new Sager Notebook.

The desktop icons appear corrupted. They have small lines, almost
like dots over part of the icon. Some are all little lines. Very
hard to make the icons out. The icons in Windows Explorer (File
Manager) are the same way.
The cursor is little lines in a square. Only the top left of the
square works.

I have used the icon repair in TweakUI with no help.
Have deleted the Iconcache file and rebooted, no help.
Also made the icons large, rebooted then made them small again,
rebooted, no help.
Ran an up to date virus scan with Avast but no help.
The rest of the desktop is normal.
I searched the group, used Google and found nothing new to try.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards,

Bill Watt

Try increasing the size of the Iconcache.
Line 121. Increase Icon Cache
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

But I suspect a problem with the monitor or its drivers. Try a repair
or reinstall of those drivers. Or try lowering graphics hardware
acceleration slide. You can lower graphics hardware acceleration in
Display Properties, Settings tab, Advanced button, Troubleshooting tab.
If this helps, you probably need a different graphics card or drivers.

Thanks Elmo,

Expanded the cache, no help. Re-install of drivers didn't help.

It now appears to be heat related although both PS and CPU fans are
running. If the keyboard and the metal plate under it are removed
then it's ok. We are going to blow out any dust that may be blocking
something. We need to get a can of compressed dry air.

I'll post back when we know what the problem is.

Thanks again,

I just noticed I suspected the problem was with the monitor. I meant
the graphics card..

It turned out to be a hardware problem. When he moves the notebook
he usually grabs it first by the left corner. He noticed when he
laid it flat it was ok but when tilted on his lap the problem
occurred. After blowing it out he separated a few connections under
the left front corner and that fixed it.

Then he repaired icons in TweakUI and that fixed the cursor.

Thanks for the suggestions Elmo.
