Corrupt .txt files... why?

I seem to have lost a whole folder of txt files and I cannot understand why
or what happened.

The files were moved from one hard drive to another on the same computer
using cut and paste in WinXP. This was done in batches over 5 months of time

The files originally had a .srt extension but were simple text files. Using
a shareware batch program I changed the extension to .txt. I've used this
same program dozens of times before.

When I went to open the files in notepad they were blank. Checking the file
with a hex editor and it is all zeros. We're talking about hundreds of files
now completely wiped out.

What could have happened?
