corrupt system files

i keep getting error message
c:\windows\system32\config\software.LOG

it says file is corrupt or unreadable and i should run chkdsk.

i have done this and it makes no difference. i'm using a dell pc and it
doesn't have an xp back up disk. i have tried system restore but it freezes.
help

Borrow one from a friend and then you can do a System File Check. (Make sure
that the disk you borrow is the same type - ie Home or Pro. I don't think
that it will matter between OEM and Retail for a System File Check...)
