My Windows 2000 Server w/ SP4 has a corrupt registry. According to
microsoft I need to run a utility called chkreg to repair the registry,
however this is not something that can be done on an active registry
hive. That means that there are 2 options.


1 - Install a parallel version of Windows 2K Server. Boot to the
parallel version, and repair the corrupt hive.


2 - Using Recovery Console, backup the current registry hives, and
restore the original hives from the recovery directoy. Boot the Server
using original hives, and repair the corrupted version. Then switch
hives again back to the newly repaired version.


I can not find detailed instruction on how to complete this process
anywhere, and do not realy want to pay $250 to have M$ walk me through
the fix. Does anyone have a set of detailed instruction that can solve
my problem. Please keep in mind that the affected server is Critical
to Business operations as it is both the PDC and Exchange Server.

What is the text of the error message you receive? Or what is the indication
that the registry is corrupt?

The Error that I recieve is a Stop Error : Stop 0x0000001E.

I am using Veritas Backup Exec on the Server to execute a full backup
every night and I recieve the error everytime veritas attempts to
backup the registry. Since late last week, I have removed the "System
State" from the back-up selections and the process runs sucessfully
every night. When I add system state back to the selection, the backup
fails.

What happens if you run Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Backup, then
choose ERD, then if you check the box for "Also backup....", then the reg
will also be backed up to
%windir%\repair\RegBack
leaving the
%windir%\repair\
directory files intact as original installation.

I don't think it is a registry corruption issue. This link may help you.

When I attempt to create ERD's with the Registry Backup option I
recieve the Following Error:

Stop 0x00000051 (0x0000000c, 0xc0000005, 0xBBEEFA9C, 0xBBEEF6F4)
Registry Error.

I take it back. The registry might be corrupt. Do you have recent backups?
The chkreg tool is your absolute last resort. Either case to backup the
registry you can copy the files from %systemroot$\system32\config to another
location.

To restore the hive files you can copy them from your backup location to;
%systemroot$\system32\config

You can do this from your parallel install or from the recovery console.

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%
