Last Wednesday evening, I turned on my computer to check emails. I was
surprised to see a black DOS screen telling me to start in safe mode, start
normally, etc. I was unable to F10 to retrieve the error, when I attempted
started Windows in all the suggested fashions, the computer shut down and
restarted the same way each time. I did a hard shut down because I couldn't
get it to turn off. When I restarted about an hour later, the settings were
the same as when we purchased the machine. All of my business letters, etc.,
pictures, music - it was all gone. I didn't do a restore on it, but when I
was going to in order to get all my stuff back the only date showing is
11/14. So, I went to PC tools (per our tech we use at work) and got the file
recover, which worked nicely - if very slowly, I actually stopped it after 12
hours. I did find all of my photos - and most of them were ok, some are lost
forever. My question now is, the windows messenger keeps telling me I have 55
system errors and my registry may be corrupt. I am really not a technically
gifted person and really have no idea how to fix this. Any help or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

drive in question and to propties and frinding tools and then error
checking

Tip from the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

The ScanDisk utility is not available in Windows XP. However, you can use
the Error-Checking tool in Windows XP to check the integrity of your hard
disk. To check for file system errors and bad sectors on your hard disk,
follow these steps:

1.
Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the local disk that you
want to check.

2.
Click Properties, and then click Tools.

3.
Under Error-checking, click Check Now.

4.
Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of
bad sectors check box.

5.
Click Start.

It's an HP Pavilion, so the F10 should have shown me the blue screen - it did
flash blue, but then shut down - it was never up for more than a split
second, so I have no clue as to what would have caused this. I did try to run
the sfc/scannnow - but it told me it couldn't find the directory, so I did
the other test as noted in a prior response, but that said everything was
fine, no bad sectors, nothing. I am still getting the messenger popping up
and telling me the registry is corrupt though - like every 2 minutes, it's
annoying as heck. And I still am missing a lot of things that were on there
before. The recovery software pulled out a ton of archived cabinet files and
that's where all of my itunes and business docs are, I'm just not sure how to
get it all out. I don't have an external device for backup purposes, but will
be getting one before I attempt to pull all that out.

o yes i forgot to mention sfc seem to work more with a xp cd, and not
so good witha recovery disk, but you can make a window disk out of
a recovery disk
