Corrupt PnP Subsystem?

This issue originally started as a problem installing a NIC (See my post
from 1/9/2006) after a Win2000 SP3 to XP SP2 upgrade. Now I am suspicious
of the whole PnP subsystem on the machine. As mentioned yesterday, the
Hardware Wizard would report that the installation of the NIC failed because
the system could not find a file. Thanks to Pavel, here are the last few
lines of the install log (setupapi.log):

#I023 Actual install section: [PCIEL905CTXM.ndi.NT]. Rank: 0x00002001.
Effective driver date: 08/01/2000.
#-166 Device install function: DIF_SELECTBESTCOMPATDRV.
#I063 Selected driver installs from section [EL90BC.905CTX.NDI] in
"c:\winnt\inf\netel90b.inf".
#I320 Class GUID of device remains: {4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
#I060 Set selected driver.
#I058 Selected best compatible driver.
#-124 Doing copy-only install of
"PCI\VEN_10B7&DEV_9200&SUBSYS_100010B7&REV_78\4&25CE13C1&0&78F0".
#-166 Device install function: DIF_REGISTER_COINSTALLERS.
#I056 Coinstallers registered.
#-166 Device install function: DIF_INSTALLINTERFACES.
#-011 Installing section [EL90BC.905CTX.NDI.Interfaces] from
"c:\winnt\inf\netel90b.inf".
#I054 Interfaces installed.
#-166 Device install function: DIF_INSTALLDEVICE.
#I123 Doing full install of
"PCI\VEN_10B7&DEV_9200&SUBSYS_100010B7&REV_78\4&25CE13C1&0&78F0".
#I121 Device install of
"PCI\VEN_10B7&DEV_9200&SUBSYS_100010B7&REV_78\4&25CE13C1&0&78F0" finished
successfully.
#E154 Class installer failed. Error 2: The system cannot find the file
specified.

Can anyone decipher this for me?

Related to this problem, explorer.exe (specifically the task bar) was
hanging right after login. Items on the desktop would respond, but the task
bar, 'Start', etc were unresponsive. After a little experimentation, I
discovered that the SSDP Discovery service ("Enable discover of UPNP devices
on your home network"). I disabled the service, and now explorer.exe does
not hang at all.

Any suggestions on how to proceed at this point? Not sure if it is missing
or corrupt files. Or maybe bad registry key(s) as a result of the upgrade.

Pointers to references, comments, suggestions, etc will be greatly
appreciated!

Thanks!

Don

Very few people will look for previous posts. You should always post enough
relevent information so a post can be understood on its own. The hang is
probably due to the missing file. The first thing would be try an updated
driver but I guess thats already been tried.

Glen,

You are right about the previous part issue. I tried to include the
relevant info in this post; just referenced the other for hard core.

After a little experimentation, I am also looking at networking as a
'sub-system of interest'. In Pavel's reply to my original post, he
suggested deleting the NIC from Safe Mode. Tried that and get something
along the lines of:

"Can not delete device as it maybe required for booting"

When I try updating the driver, it says it failed per the discussion in this
thread.

So it seems either PnP or networking has latched on to the NIC and won't let
it go. The funny thing is that the system does not complain if I remove the
NIC completely! If I swap NICs, it recognizes the new NIC, but run into the
same problem not being able to update or uninstall it.

Dang frustrating!!

Don

Ok, if in safe mode removing does not work, I have to give up.
Setupapi log shows some clues but not enough for me
(need to see the registry, files etc).
Hopefully somebody else could help.

Good luck
