Corrupt HD won't boot

I have a HP desktop with a recovery partition on the hd. Boot from C:\
returns "Disk read failure, hit alt, ctrl, del". Can boot to recovery
partition (F10), but only destructive recovery is available. Would like to
salvage data if possible. When I try to use recovery console from install
CD, hangs up when "inspecting hardware configuration" and never returns.
Tried attaching as slave in another unit. Can read the FAT recovery
partition, but not primary. Primary shows in My Computer, but is not
accessible. How can I repair to salvage data?
