Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
this is the message i get. It reboots if I hit any key,
and goes to this message. How do I goe to a c promt so I
can install this file?
..

I downloaded hal, made the 6 boot disk set. then
tried 'copy a: hal.dll c: system32\hal.dll'
It seemed to copy ok, but I still get the same message.
How do I copy this file?

You'll probably need to expand the file from the CD.
Type this command:
expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ (substitute "d" for the letter of your CD drive)
c:\windows\system32\hal.dll.
Substitute d: for the drive letter of your CD.
Once the file is expanded exit the Recovery Console and restart the
computer.
