I would suggest performing a "clean install" of Windows XP.

| Hi there, I tried to install Windows XP the other day,
| upgrading from 98, but a short while after it begins, It
| tells me that the installation cannot continue due to my
| hard drive being corrupt. It suggests running a scandisk to
| allieviate the problem, but here is the trouble... Whenever
| i try to run scandisk, i get the message informing me that
| another program has changed the hard drive and scandisk has
| been restarted 10 times, i get this message even when
| running in safe mode. is there any hope of resolving this
| without having to resort to a full format?
