I just bought a wide screen 20" monitor as a replacement for my 19" LCD
external laptop monitor. the recommended resolution is 1680x1050 but the
available resolutions (XP SP2) go only as high as 1600x1200.

The picture is somewhat fuzzy and web pages start elongated with empty space
on the right side, and need to be resized.

Monitor support says to contact PC support since the monitor is "plugnplay."
PC support said to download latest video driver. I did and everything is
still the same.

Anyone with experience with this resolution? Any help?

If there is a monitor.ini file that is supplied with the monitor, then
install it. This is what really makes it "plug-n-play". In addition, the
refresh rate is important in terms of both sharpness and utilization of
the monitor screen sizing and positioning.

Many video cards don't support the highest resolutions of the newer
monitors.

Try a resolution that is in line with the 1680/1050 one, which is an odd
resolution.

Your new monitor is a 1.6:1 ratio, the old was 1.3:1, so pick something
that gives a 1.6:1 ratio.

Flat panel monitors really don't care too much about the refresh rate
And they certainly should never change sharpness and size and
positioning since the number and position of the pixels is determined
during the manufacturing process. But to stand a chance of hitting the
optimum resolution installing the .ini file is a definite must-do. But
if the video card is sufficiently old and the drivers inflexible even
that may not help.

Purchase and install a new video adapter that supports the resolutions
that the new monitor is capable of handling.

You can try to see if there are newer drivers for your video card, but my
guess is that you will need a new video card to support your wide screen
monitor.
