Copying System Boot Drive

I added a second hard drive, and partitioned and formatted it as a basic
drive with Disk Manager.

I would prefer to replace my original system/boot drive with the new drive
if it is not to much trouble, but I'm assuming that if I were to simply copy
the original drive to a partition on the new drive, I would not have the
proper permissions set on the new system.

I looked at Backup/Restore but if I understand correctly, I would have to
re-install Windows on the new partition before I could restore anything. Is
this correct?

Is there an easy way to do this with re-installing Windows XP?

You have to buy an imaging program such as Ghost or True Image. The program
will allow you to copy a drive, sector by sector to a new drive. You then
remove the old drive, set the jumper correctly on the new drive as master or
single, and boot from the new drive. After the first initial boot off of the
new drive, you can install the old drive as a slave unit, format to clean it
out and use the drive for storage and backups.

Download the *free* Hard Disk Utilities from the Hard Drive Manufacturer of
the new hard drive to copy your drive and follow their directions. These
utilities may have been provided with the Hard Drive.

Most disk manufacturers offer a free cloning tool on their home page.
After cloning, make sure to boot the machine the first time with just
the new drive connected, not with both connected.

I recommend you to read this article, if you decide to use disk imaging
software. http://www.freewebs.com/disk_backup

There you can find comparison of leading backup software, e.g. latest
acronis true image 9.0. I hope that author is going to continue testing
disk backup and cloning software.

Fred,

well, not very easy, but it can be done.

Please have a look at http://winhlp.com/WxMove.htm .

Richard,

that's a convenient way, but you don't have to. There are other
ways.
