I thought I copied a file from one machine to another in order to
backup the file. I did right click/copy/highlight new place/paste.
When I go to view the folder it was copied to, it shows a target
shortcut file, but not the contents of the folder. Does this mean
that the files were not copied and pasted to this location, but rather
that a shortcut to the original location was pasted?

Probably. I'd just do the whole process again, making sure to get the
folder, not a shortcut.
