copying files, files either end up in target directory or root directory of disk

I was in the process of copying files from 1 win2000 pro
computer to another win2000 pro computer. Both are fully
updated and NTFS. So I started the copying process and
then it stops, and prompts me with a box titled:
-------------------------------------------------------
Select Filename...
The destination does not support long file names. Please
enter a name for this file.
Original path: ...\myFileName
To folder:
New Name: windowsSuggestedFileName
-------------------------------------------

myFileName has been substituted as has
windowsSuggestedFileName. The thing is I have had no
problems copying file names that are longer than the
fileName that windows complains about, and there wasn't a
problem creating these file names on the machine I am
copying from.

There are also several directories where the first 12-20
characters of the directory name are the same, as are the
filenames in the directories, and this file happens to be
one of those files in one of those directories.

SO, I delete the directory with the problematic file, and
try to copy it again. I even list the directory contents
through the cmd prompt. I drag the folder containing
the "too long a filename" and now windows tells me that
the folder already contains a file named MYFILE~1.EXT. I
choose to overwrite it, copies... copies... then it
prompts me to change file name again for the file I was/am
having trouble with... I click on automatic. copies...
copies... Finally it finishes, and I go to open up the
folder that I just dragged over and it is empty.

I have no problem copying this problematic directory/file
to another directory on target machine, but it still wont
let me move the problematic file to my target directory
even when file resides on same disk. It is also weird
because I noticed that all the files in the same directory
as the problematic file all get copied to the root
directory instead of the target folder. Sorry for typing
so much information.

Any help would be most appreciated. I have plenty of
diskspace available and my view is defaulted to seeing
hidden files.
